August 17

Day one in Southern Germany was spent walking along the cobble stoned streets of historic Schwäbisch Hall. The city dates back to the fifth century, where it's claim to fame was the salt that was distilled from it's groundwater by the Celts. We saw the St. Michaels, a church that was built sometime in the fourteenth century, and still has a mass grave or bone house under it's foundations (you can see the hundreds of bones stored there through a glass pane in the floor). There were art museums, buskers along the river, crooked little houses, and a walk through the park for our afternoon cappuccino.

August 15

Jenni read about kayaking in Western Sweden in the National Geographic and it instantly went on our To Do list while were there...and do we recomend it? 100%.

We had the best day of our week weather-wise...it was balmy with a little breeze, and after a lengthy how-to that we understood not a word of, we pushed off into the open sea. We paddled passed and around several islands in the Northern Gothenburg Archipelago, and it was pretty dang spectacular. Little fishing villages, ferry routes, uninhabited islands, fika on an uninhabited island with a little nap time, a little swimming. Perfection.

August 12

There's this thing in Sweden where they have miles of abandoned railroad that wind through valleys and towns, and then little glorified bicycles that go on the tracks. You rent a glorified bicycle and the fun never stops.

Day two of our inland adventure was a splendid success, complete, of course with fika.

Ps. Also there was a traditional Swedish breakfast spread and I got to have it with this muffin.

August 11

These kids waste no time. On Sunday morning bright and early we were on our merry way to adventure. We left on the 7 O'we-shouldn't-be-up ferry to Lake Laxjön, a gorgeous basin, about three hours inland. We had a lovely little villa all to ourselves, the perfect home base for forays out into the cold...because it was. It poured (HI SUMMER!). It was the most dramatic canoe trip I have maybe ever embarked upon (unless you count the time I told Alisa and Kelsey that I could canoe when I couldn't and almost floated us over a waterfall). There was rain and thunder and lightning and a sky that would have done Mordor proud and it was just beautiful.

August 9

I suppose I'm leaving today. To a little island off the coast of Sweden for a little while. And then to visit my Oma and Opa in a Deutche village called Lendsiedel...and with Jenni Husby no less.

I'm so ready for an adventure!

July 21

Today was about 80 degrees, we took a boat out onto the lake, and had the ice cream cruise swing by and throw ice cream sandwiches at us.

July 10

Well these two are off for new adventures. In Portland. With a new job. And, oh yea, a BABY!

We had a farewell picnic for them at Gas Works today - BBQ sauce and cupcakes included, duh - and spent a very pleasant evening with a set of banana grams and several mugs of tea.

Seve and Clint have cheered Markus and I on from the very beginning - they are a huge blessing to us as a couple as well as to us individually. These kids know how to have a good time and we will miss them terribly!

It's lucky for them they have a big apartment.

July 9

I'm convinced I will one day see an Orca whale whilst on a ferry boat.
At the very least a Porpoise.

The Puget Sound must be teaming with them in the summer time, I'm sure of it.

July 8

In such a big way today.

Maybe because Markus just got back starry eyed from Japan? Maybe because I long to be out in the sun with nothing tugging at my time? Maybe because I want to be so overwhelmed with color and smells and people and views that all I can really do is to rest in these things and be in awe?

I'm getting out of town tomorrow. Just for a little bit.

July 6

The week of Bulthuis-family-fun-sans-most-of-the-Bulthuis' continues!

Today the lovely Ms. Rebecca Bishop (Markus's cousin) became Mrs. Henry Boykin and it was an honor to be there to witness their vows.

Jenny and I bonded. Clearly.

We took the Little's swimming and explored Olympia and the Capitol Building (and caused a ruckus when we flung phones/walked over/dropped metal rods on the roped off seal of Washington) before raising our cupcakes (and costume pieces) to the new Mr. and Mrs.

June 26

This one left today on a jet plane to Japan and I already miss him so.
It hasn't been 24 hours.
11 more days to go!

June 8

As of June 10th, my love and I will have been dating for three years. Three glorious years full of laughter and tears and learning and much pizza.

But because the 10th is a Monday we decided to celebrate today on Vashon Island.

It was delightful.

June 6

maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach (to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles, and

milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;

and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles: and

may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

May 27

Happiest of birthdays Livs!

My gloriously talented, funny, big hearted house mate turned 24 on the 25th...but we celebrated her today with cinnamon rolls and hash browns fried to crispy perfection.

Olivia, my dear, you are a treasured part of our community, and my life. I am glad to have you in it and I am always quite blown away by your thoughtfulness and your ability to remain true to yourself. You're pretty great.

And then it was back to Seattle to see this face. It was so missed!

May 26

We're Ellensburg-bound and so excited about it.

After a busy, beautiful day yesterday full of wedding love and great music (Thanks Friends and Family! You guys were incredible!) Kali and I decided a road trip and couple days with Livs in the country would be ideal. The drive down was, as always, breathtaking - miles of staggering, misty mountain views - and things cleared up right about lunch time. Just in time for wine tasting and walks and books and a nap.

May 4

Truely, we live in a beautiful corner of the world. We took dinner out to the set today, and the rainforest in all it's ancient glory is just breathtaking. Thick beds of moss cover the ground and wrap around giant tree limbs, light filters in green and gold dapples through thousands of leaves, and the air is heavy and fresh at the same time, if there is such a thing.

If I were a bird, this is probably where I would live.

A scene from Prospect. It does feel other worldly, no?

May 3

Here we are, on the Olympic Peninsula, cooking for the masses and taking in the sun and the sea.

This weekend we're feeding 25 people - two vegetarians, one allergic to sprouts, another allergic to garlic, a vegan, and a lady who is kosher. And we say BRING IT.

So far we have had only one semi-catastrophe in the form of little balls of deepfried chickpeas also known as falafel also known as the devil. They are a wonderful option for those who would like to a. entirely smoke a house out, b.cause personal injury, or c.burn said house down altogether. We threw our perfectly formed little discs of perfectly seasoned mix into our perfectly simmering oil, whereupon all our perfect discs promplty dissintegrated to greese-soaked mash, onions floating sadly to the surface, as we looked morosely on.

We fixed it (flour and less oil, who knew?). There was a lot of self-congratulatary speak thereafter and everyone was fed so really, all's well that ends well. And we're making curry tonight - curry can do no wrong.

Also we went to La Push, and it is spectacular. The picture above is us standing in trunk of the most giant piece of drift wood (drift trunk? drift tree?) I have ever seen.

May 2

It's road trip time. I've been excited about this for weeks and it's finally here. Hannah and I are off to Forks (ie: The Twilight Zone) to go cook for the cast and crew of Prospect. Shep Films is going to work their magic and film a sci-fi short that's going to be nothing short of amazing, and it is such an honor to get to help out even minimally!

Josh, Clark (a champion among men for driving for a thousand hours), and I headed down the highway after work today and made it to the coast just in time for the sunset. After that it was a quick jump over to Forks, the brooding rainforest, a giant cabin, Hannie Mac, and the 40 breakfast burritoes that had to be ready for a 4 am breakfast call.

April 21

The original plan was Guemes Island (for to spend some time with the lovely Nelly)...but then,of course, it bucketed. It was gray and oh-so-wet when we woke up...and I cannot deny that it was a little bit pleasant to lay in my bed for ten minutes and listen to the rain beating against the windows. Is Lynden rain different?

So we stayed in our pijamas and had coffee and scones with the family. As soon as those little mini scones came out of the oven I felt very affirmed in my choice.

Being that the North West is the way it is, it cleared up and got beautiful. So after a wonderful lunch of Russian Dumplings in Bellingham, we had a chilly walk by the water, before packing back to our Emerald City.

To walk is by a thought to go;
To move in spirit to and fro;
To mind the good we see;
To taste the sweet;
Observing all the things we meet
How choice and rich they be.

To note the beauty of the day,
And golden fields of corn survey;
Admire each pretty flow’r
With its sweet smell;
To praise their Maker, and to tell
The marks of his great pow’r.

To fly abroad like active bees,
Among the hedges and the trees,
To cull the dew that lies
On ev’ry blade,
From ev’ry blossom; till we lade
Our minds, as they their thighs.

Observe those rich and glorious things,
The rivers, meadows, woods, and springs,
The fructifying sun;
To note from far
The rising of each twinkling star
For us his race to run.

A little child these well perceives,
Who, tumbling in green grass and leaves,
May rich as kings be thought,
But there’s a sight
Which perfect manhood may delight,
To which we shall be brought.

While in those pleasant paths we talk,
’Tis that tow’rds which at last we walk;
For we may by degrees
Wisely proceed
Pleasures of love and praise to heed,
From viewing herbs and trees.

April 20

Happy Birthday Ada! This girl turns 4 on Monday, and in celebration of that fact, Jenny threw her a pink ballerina party - and it was a pink ballerina party worthy of acclaim, truly a testament to Jenny's party planning finesse. There were crepes and chandeliers and tutus and Angelina Ballerina and a three tiered cake with little peanut butter slippers on it.

Ada is a firecracker. I can't wait to see her change the world one day - she's already making bold strides towards that accomplishment.

Markus and I headed up from Seattle this morning to join in the festivities - Ada is his first and much beloved niece after all - and besides playing with the littles and eating deliciousness in pancake form, much good time was had spending time with his family, catching up, and taking in the Lynden air.

And this is Ruby, she is precious no?
