March 31

If she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation: that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack, and Death itself would start working backward.

- CS Lewis

Easter began at 5 am, in the dark. With coffee and candles, we read through the story of the beginning of time, accounts of prophets, acts of faith, and the sacrifice that atoned for every instance of evil that happened since then and forever after. As the sun came up and filtered through the stained glass, we blew out our candles - how much brighter, more full is the light that is given freely to us - and raised our voices, our bells, our thanksgiving in celebration of the knowledge that He is risen. He is risen indeed.

It is now 9. More coffee, breakfast, and mimosas. And a glorious day.

Markus and I took a stroll down the waterfront park and reveled in real-life warm weather and the first ice-coffees of the year...before a lamb roast and mashed potatoes dinner brought to the masses by Michael Frank, chef extraordinaire. Of course. And for all these things I was - am - very thankful.

He is the handsomest.

March 30

Golden Gardens, Seattle

What a rush! I got back to Seattle this morning after several hours on North West public transportation (the Portland max is a life skill every person should learn - take the leap) just in time to give my boo a quick kiss and totter off to a photoshoot I had the pleasure of doing for a wonderful expecting mama. AND THEN WE HAD A BONFIRE AT THE BEACH! I love weekends.

Angela and Josh are expecting a little girl addition to their family in the next month and we had a great time wondering through some of Magnolia's best in the Spring sunshine. Her belly is the best, no?

March 29

Today was a home day. Additionally delicious was that it was a Friday. I slept it, had coffee with my
dear Aunty Marty, and spent the day outside with my littles - we found a bird ("CAN WE KEEP HIM MOM?!" "Honey, he won't be happy in Tibet" #missionarykidproblems), built a worm house, had lunch in a fort, went cycling, played in the park, and in general had a kid-worthy day. There were so many adventures to be had.

March 28

I decided on an adventure last night. I packed a backpack, bought myself a train ticket and decided to go home.

There is something about going places by myself that is reassuring - a good reminder that I am capable and independant, that time with myself is enjoyable, that my life is made up of more than just one picture.

6 hours later I am here. With Moroccan food on the table, cousins to chat with, and a Settlers game to fall asleep through.

March 24

Seattle bound again! It was brief, out little sojourn to the country, and lovely. My dearest unfortunately ran into some trial and tribulation in the form of shrimp that I allowed to be put on the table (they expired in 2010). To be fair, they were mixed in in minute quantities with an island concoction Sri Lankans know as Chinese Chilli Paste which a. I've always assumed never expired and b. Markus will probably never eat again. This of course made the prospect of driving home a little hellish, but we trucked on. He trucked on, I should say - I was a little useless (being about as confident as a jellyfish on stilts when it comes to driving stick shift vehicles).

Besides that we had a beautiful drive up, good conversation, and made it safe and sound to the bosom of our city

How I felt, how he felt.

March 23

These are some of the Rubesh littles. And they are some of the best. Meet Sean, Ellie, and Anna (from left to right) and their thrilled big cousin Kristian. We had a glorious Saturday in Trout Lake running around in the woods, exploring their tree fort, eating blueberry coffee cake and Thai food, and getting ballet recitals. Oh yes and also sleeping in.

It's Friday. We made it. Here's to a weekend of fun and revelry (and also 9 hours in the car).

Happy Weekend!!

March 21

Today was number four of five times my mouth will visit the dentist in two weeks - do I deserve the hours of drilling, trying not to swallow cotton swabs, and drooling into my scarf? Absolutely. Kids, go to the dentist. I put if off for three years and it did not bode well. If I put all my cavities together I would have a moon crater.

But then again, I am now fast friends with the dental staff at the Brian Moody dentistry and I look at this view when I'm not staring up at an x-ray of my 32 pieces of side walk chalk teeth (which look uncannily like a bunch of toes).

March 20: First Day of Spring

Picture taker unknown. But it's lovely, is it not?

March 19

I GOT SNAIL MAIL FROM D.C.! And then had a small fit because I was so excited...and a fit in this case usually looks like utter calm because I'm trying to prolong the experience of opening a letter (from Kelson no less) for as long as possible (I spent many minutes just looking at it curling my toes before slowly opening it with a letter opener aka. my house keys so as to not ruin the lovely script).

What a wonderful thing it is to read words in handwriting you know so well, words that are encouraging, and newsy, and a solid reminder of what amazing friendships I'm blessed with.

Thank you dearest, you make my day!

From Sleep Like a Tiger

Today I put together a children's book display - a book display of many many books that won awards for being culturally relavent, creative, beautifull illustrated, wittily worded, and just being wonderful stories.

It is my goal to write a children's book some day.

March 17

Carmen, Park in Queen Anne, WA

Babysitting is a fun thing in the Spring.

1. Get them out of the house.
2. Pack snacks.
3. Find a large expanse of field and/or a tree for said small individuals.
4. Settle down with your book.

Things of note:
The girls asked if I was 160. The answer was "try again".
They caught a leprechaun last night. He is in fact a red head and turned the toilet water green.
How does one explain to a six year old what a square root is? What six year old want to know?
They also wanted to know if my boyfriend likes me and also if I kiss him...on the lips. I do. (gross)
All they wanted for lunch was five packets of seaweed and then they made me dance to Ricky Martin.

Never a dull moment.

March 16

My little brother was here again this week. He is such a gem and I love him dearly. And also he's the funniest man I know. We hiked around discover park and had popcorn shrimp at fisherman's terminal and did a lot of quality sibling things...mostly all in a thick Sri Lankan accent which caused raucus laughter from mostly just us. #comebacksoon

The tree next door is blurry with pink roses. They are everywhere and oh so lovely.

March 14

We have a 3D art class offered here at SPU, so every quarter or so, the library is taken over by carefully crafted little human beings, three headed dogs, Alice (the one from Wonderland who keeps falling down the stairwell), birds, and this larger than life spider who apparently escaped the set of The Hobbit.

March 9

This is not our best picture I'm afraid. We had just been kayaking, I am clearly unshowered, we are all matching in blue. But then again, kayaking, lazy Saturdays, and matching sibs are things to be celebrated, no? So the picture will be a testament to our good day, shining proof of our reunion, and love for sports and cool colors. #familyforthewin

Also look at this from only a month ago. Proof that this year has taken off at a canter.

Stole this one right off of his facebook profile. Photo credit to Hannah?

It was this guy's birthday (↑) so we had a party (↓) and celebrated his 24th year in this world.

We love you Stephen and are so happy you were born. Happy Birthday old friend!

March 5

This girl arrived today and I couldn't be happier! It always does feel like a large piece of my soul is returning to me. Now for a few solid days of reading out loud, (dutch) culinary adventures (see kip in de hoed, or chicken in the hat), talks over tea, and several, several good laughs and stories. Welcome home Hanniebee!

March 3

We got some sun today. And good sleep. And camp coffee, mocassins, and a walk along the ocean shore. Camping, I'll have you know, is good for the spirit.

March 2

Cape Disappointment, WA

We went camping this weekend - and by camping, I mean we rented a yurt. Cape Disappointment, with its foggy cliffs, sister lighthouses, and Pacific Ocean beaches was really all we could ask for - breathtakingly beautiful, and so much scope for imagination.
